Directions

Thank you for purchasing the Vicks® baby digital thermometer, a professionally accurate instrument for comfortably measuring a baby's temperature. Please read these instructions carefully to ensure accurate temperatures and safe operation. When used properly, this high quality thermometer will give you years of accurate, dependable use. The Vicks® baby digital thermometer (V934) is designed specifically for measuring rectal temperatures of babies. Important safety information: High, prolonged fever requires medical attention especially for young children. Please contact your pediatrician. This product is not a toy. Do not allow child to play with it. Adult supervision is required in the use of this product. This product is designed to measure human body temperature. Do not use it for any other purpose. If you have any questions or comments about the Vicks® baby digital thermometer, call our toll-free Consumer Service Line: 1-800-477-0457. Temperature readings vary from person to person. Although there is no one "normal" temperature reading, a temperature, taken rectally, ranging between 98-100.4 degrees F is considered normal. The best method to determine your baby's normal temperature is to use the thermometer when they are feeling well. Record the temperature twice a day (early morning and late afternoon). Take the average of the two temperatures. This is considered your baby's normal body temperature. Any variation from it may indicate some sort of illness and you should consult your pediatrician. Note: This method produces a temperature approximately 1 degrees higher than a temperature taken orally and 2 degrees higher than a temperature taken under the arm. Before use: Your Vicks® baby digital thermometer is designed specifically for rectal use. It is recommended that for 15 minutes prior to use, your child should avoid eating or drinking any liquids, physical activity, or bathing. Operating your Vicks® baby digital thermometer. Press the on/off button to activate the thermometer. A beep will sound and the display will come on. The display will first show the LCD display test (fig. 1) and then show the last reading. After 5 seconds, the display will be in the ready mode (fig. 2) and the display light will go off. Important: before first use, remove label from the display. For rectal use: Use for babies, young children, or when it is difficult to take an oral or underarm temperature. Important: for sanitary reasons, once this thermometer has been used for a rectal reading, do not use it for an oral reading. Clean it thoroughly before using again or on a different child. 1. Lubricate the tip with a water-soluble jelly for easier insertion. Do not use a petroleum jelly. Read the label of the lubricant to be sure you are using the right kind. 2. The proper position for a baby is to lay on its stomach with legs hanging down, either across your knees or at the edge of a bed or changing table. This positions the infant's rectum for safe and easy insertion of the thermometer. 3. Gently insert the tip of the thermometer no more than 1/2 inch into the rectum. The guard above the tip is designed to prevent over-insertion. If you detect resistance, stop. Hold the thermometer in place during measurement. 4. When the peak temperature is reached (usually 10 seconds) 10 beep signals will sound and the "degrees F" sign will stop flashing and the display light will come on. The temperature is now ready to read and will not change when the thermometer is removed. 5. Turn the thermometer off by pressing the on/off button. The display light will come on automatically to illuminate the last reading, then unit will power off. If you forget to turn it off, the thermometer will automatically turn off after approximately 9 minutes. Reminder: Wash the thermometer as recommended before placing it back in the storage case. See instructions below. Underarm (axillary) use: 1. Wipe the underarm with a towel. 2. Place the thermometer under the arm so the tip is touching the skin and position the arm next to the body. With a young child, it is sometimes helpful to hug the child to keep their arm next to their body. This helps hold the thermometer steady and ensures that the room air does not affect the reading. 3. When the peak temperature is reached (usually 30 seconds) 10 beep signals will sound and the "degrees F" sign will stop flashing and the display light will come on. The temperature is now ready to read and will not change when the thermometer is removed. 4. Turn the thermometer off by pressing the On/Off button. If you forget to turn it off, the thermometer will automatically turn off after approximately 9 minutes. 5. Wash the thermometer as recommended. Automatic night glow display: The night glow display works automatically as you turn your Vicks thermometer on or off. When turned on, the display will glow for 5 seconds to illuminate the last temperature taken and the ready display. When you turn off the thermometer, the display will glow again, illuminating the temperature reading for 4 seconds. To recall the last temperature: When the thermometer is turned on, the last measured temperature will be shown on the LCD display with the letter "M" shown under the degree sign for approximately 2 seconds. Cleaning instructions: Clean the sensor area of the thermometer only by washing with soap and warm water or rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol). Wipe dry with soft cloth. Do not submerge the readout display of the thermometer in water. This will cause the thermometer to no longer function properly. Do not boil or clean in dishwasher. This will cause the thermometer to no longer function and will void the warranty. Do not wash the unit with any thinner or chemical solvent. Changing the batteries: The Vicks® baby digital thermometer features a long life battery. When the "?" appears in the lower right of the display, the battery is exhausted and needs replacing. 1. With a coin or screwdriver, release cover lock located on the side of the thermometer and remove the battery with a non-metallic instrument. 2. Carefully discard the old battery. Keep out of reach of young children, elderly and pets. 3. Replace with a type SR41 (long life), LR41, or equivalent, making sure the positive (+) side is facing the back of the thermometer. 4. Replace battery cover. Your thermometer is now ready for use.
