History of the cranberry orange cheese torta: the cranberry orange cheese torta was developed to highlight Oregon Cranberries. No..we don't grow oranges in Oregon, but the combination was an awakening of the taste buds! A hint of cinnamon and cardamom brought warmth out to balance the tartness... And a new torta was born! This torta is great with sparkling wines, port and dessert wines and best of all enjoyed with family and friends throughout the year. Ah... life is good! Cranberry tidbits: Some cranberry beds are over 100 years old and still producing. American and Canadian sailors on long voyages knew they could eat cranberries to protect themselves from scurvy -- making them a cranberry counterpart to British "limeys." In 1996, the Worldwide Cranberry Harvest produced 40 cranberries for every person on the planet. It takes about 200 cranberries to make one can of cranberry sauce. There are approximately 333 cranberries in a pound, 3,333 cranberries in one gallon of juice, 33,333 cranberries in a 100-pound barrel. About 38,000 acres in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington State account for most of the world's production of cranberries. When the vines bloom in the late spring and the flowers' light pink petals twist back, they have a resemblance to the head and bill of a crane. The cranberry gets its name from Dutch and German settlers who called it "crane berry".
