Replace filter every 40 gallons (about 2 months for the average family). Easy Setup. Wash your hands before unwrapping the filter. 1. Flush filter with cold water for 15 seconds. 2. Insert filter into reservoir. Press firmly. 3. Add cold tap water. Pour out the first 3 pitchers/ 1 dispenser of water. 4. Replace filter every 40 gallons (about two months). It is normal for carbon dust to appear in your first 3 pitchers or first dispenser. Discard this water or use it to water plants. See User's guide on Brita.com for detailed instructions.

The Brita standard filter keeps as healthy level of fluoride, a water additive that promotes strong teeth (applies to fluoridated municipal tap water). The contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by this water treatment device are not necessarily in all user's water. The Brita standard filter is not intended to purify water.
