The rural farm paintings of Lavern Kammerude. Welcome to a special place of hard work and respect for the land, of friendly neighbors and family togetherness, of closeness to tradition and the cycle of the seasons. Welcome to Lavern Kammerude's world of rural America. As a boy working alongside his father on their farm in Southwestern Wisconsin, Lavern grew up loving the land and his rural upbringing. His life consisted of milking cows, daily chores and seasonal work of planting, making hay, and harvesting crops. He farmed until the late 1960s when hard economic times forced him to find work off the farm to support his family. Lavern began painting in his mid-50s. For two decades, oil-on-masonite became his means of expressing the memories he so loved. The paintings he created for friends and family were bright, colorful, highly-detailed images of everyday life in America's rural Midwest during the first half of the 20th century. The meticulous and accurate details make his paintings a valuable historical record of this bygone era. Kammerude's theme throughout his works was community, both young and old working together. His paintings gained local popularity with farmers and small businesses servicing a rural clientele. Soon they could be seen in corporate office of large agriculture-related companies. A Kammerude painting even graced the walls of the U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture's Office.
