Recommended seed per 1000 square feet: new lawn = 3-4 lbs; established lawns = 2 lbs. Preparation - For a new lawn, till soil to a depth of 6-8 inches. Remove all rocks and foreign matter, then apply an all-purpose fertilizer. Rake or roll seedbed until the surface is smooth and firm. To Overseed an established lawn, simply mow grass very low, then rake out thatch. Sowing - Broadcast half the seed evenly over the entire seedbed, sowing in one direction. Spread the other half evenly at a right angle to your first path. For best results - Remix contents before spreading. Rake and Cover - Seed will germinate best when covered lightly with soil - no more than 1/8 inch. Rake lightly or roll to achieve this. For better moisture retention, apply a light mulch over seedbed. Watering - Keep the top layer of soil moist with fine mist until the grass is established. Avoid traffic in the lawn until the first moving in approximately 3 to 6 weeks. This will ensure a better root system. Watering Tips - Water lightly several times per day until grass is 1 inch tall. Then, water thoroughly daily until third mowing. After lawn is established, water once or twice a week, applying 1 inch of water overt the entire surface. Mowing Tips - Do not mow until grass is at least 2.5 inches tall, and use a sharp mower blade. Mow often enough that no more than 30% of blade height is cut at a time. During the summer, raise mower height to 2 - 2.5 inches. Avoid mowing the same pattern every mowing to deter compaction of soil. Sharpen mower blade regularly. Fertilizer Tips - For the proper starter fertilizer and for the amount to work into your soil prior to seeding, check with your local supplier or your county extension agent. When lawn is established, use an all-purpose fertilizer each year in mid-spring and in early and late fall to maintain thick growth. Following these instructions, you can expect a healthy sod root structure.
